A US weather map reveals that a severe drought coupled with a heatwave is expected to cause millions to endure sizzling conditions well into August. According to the National Weather Service, regions like California and Nevada are on high alert as they prepare to battle extreme temperatures and receive fire warnings.

Cities including Phoenix, Las Vegas , and Lake Mead, with central and southern parts of California, are gearing up for intense heat and an increased risk of wildfires. The "portions of southwest Arizona and southeast and southern California" are under an Excessive Heat Warning, per the NWS.

The worst drought conditions are currently striking areas of Texas , New Mexico, Montana, Virginia, Alabama, and both North and South Carolina. In an ironic twist, despite facing prolonged heatwaves this summer, states such as California, Arizona, and Nevada are not marked as suffering from drought at present.

A Drought Monitor map from the National Weather Service shows approximately 17 percent of the US is grappling with drought conditions, which is a significant increase from last month, reports the Mirror US . Officials from the NWS have issued warnings about "dangerously hot conditions," forecasting "temperatures ranging from 107 to 117 degrees and heat indices reaching up to 124 degrees" expected soon.

The NWS has issued a stark warning on Twitter about the relentless heatwave: "The latest on the dangerous heat that continues over portions of the interior West. The heat will begin to spread into the northern Plains on Tuesday. Some daily record-tying/breaking high temperatures are possible."

They cautioned the public, stating: "Overexposure can cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion to develop and, without intervention, can lead to heat stroke," and advised, "Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes."

When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water," they added.
