McIlroy narrowly missed out on a medal , falling short by just two strokes at Le Golf National after faltering on the back nine in his chase of the leaders. World number one Scottie Scheffler clinched the gold following a close contest with Tommy Fleetwood, while Hideki Matsuyama secured the bronze.
The four-day event was a hit among golf enthusiasts, showcasing the world's top players competing against each other for only the fifth time this year. McIlroy acknowledged the significance of the tournament but also e xpressed frustration over the division between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour , calling the current situation in golf a "---- show".
Schauffele, who had a disappointing tie for ninth place in his attempt to defend his gold medal, was not particularly sympathetic to McIlroy's grievances. Despite being one of LIV's most vocal critics, McIlroy seemed to have moderated his views recently.
His response to McIlroy's fluctuating stance was clear: "He kind of bounces around with his opinion, you know. He said that he... he's reverted on that topic."
"Yeah, I mean, there's something to be said about it. There's a lot of heart and patriotism. You're proud of what you're doing and the colors you're wearing. That's probably what he's reverting to.
"It is a different feeling, and this year was incredible. You know, if you were in Tokyo, it's cool, and this year is very different with the fans and the people and being able to see other games. It was much closer to what is a real Olympics experience."
Golf enthusiasts will have to hold their breath until next April to watch the world's top players compete again, which will be at The Masters. The split between tours sees the game's elite dividing up, but that'll all change when the eagerly-awaited merger goes through.
The PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund are still engaged in talks to end the sport's divide, but McIlroy confessed he hasn't heard anything from the PGA Tour Transaction Committee in a while.
Speaking at the Olympics on Saturday, he said: "I have no idea what's going on. I'm blissfully unaware. ".
