One of Ireland’s best preserved medieval villages is located in the smallest county. Carlingford in Co Louth is a magical village that transports visitors back in time.

Tourists often report a majestic feeling as they roam the narrow medieval streets and learn about the history of the village.

Carlingford has no shortage of historical sites to visit, many of which you can walk between. One of the most iconic landmarks is King John’s Castle which was built in the 12th century. The fortress offers stunning views of Carlingford Lough and the surrounding mountains.

Back in the 9th century, Vikings invaded Ireland and according to historical records, they occupied Carlingford in Lough, which was a naturally secure bay. Carlingford was inhabited in the 12th century by Norman knight Hugh de Lacy.

Another historical site is the Tholsel, a medieval gatehouse that once served as a tollgate and a prison. Today, it is a marker of Carlingford’s past and is a popular spot for locals to walk around the grounds. Hiking enthusiasts will find what they’re looking for in the Cooley mountains, with top-tier walking trails and a chance to spot some local wildlife.

Carlingford is the perfect blend of history and adventure. It’s stunning landscape and rich heritage make it a perfect destination for history lovers and thrill seekers. Younger visitors may enjoy a visit to Ireland's last remaining Leprechaun cavern.

Carlingford is about an hour and 15 minutes from Dublin and makes an excellent day trip if you're staying in the city.
