A woman in her 40s tragically lost her life at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport after becoming trapped in the baggage claim machinery .

The woman was found unresponsive at Terminal 5 , which is home to several international airlines, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

It remains unclear whether she was a tourist or an airport employee. Both the police and the Chicago Fire Department have yet to release further details about the incident, and the airport has not commented on the tragedy.

O'Hare International Airport, located near the Rosemont area of Chicago, opened its doors in 1944 and hosts all major airlines including United Airlines, American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, and Spirit Airlines.

According to Fly Chicago, as of August 2024, the airport operates around 964 daily direct flights to 171 US cities and approximately 129 daily direct flights to 65 international destinations across North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.

In January 2023, a new extension of Terminal 5, originally built in 1993, was unveiled as part of the O'Hare 21 project. Construction for this project began in 2019, with the significant changes forming part of a $1.3 billion, multi-year investment project aimed at expanding and modernizing the O'Hare gate, reports the Irish Mirror .

O'Hare is looking to upgrade the customer experience and make things run smoother for tourists. The terminal enhancements include an extra 10 gates, a more spacious building, and rejigged facilities for international arrivals.

In a tragic incident last month, passengers witnessed a woman die after she collapsed on a Virgin Australia flight. She fell ill around 9.30 am that Monday morning.

Despite the flight crew's CPR efforts during an expedited landing at Victoria's Tullamarine airport at 10.15 am, she did not survive.

Emergency personnel were prepped and ready on the runway to provide assistance. Speaking to the Mirror at the time, a representative from Virgin Australia confirmed: "The passenger was taken off the aircraft but unfortunately later passed away".
