Chilling nuclear bomb simulation shows damage 'Castle Bravo' would wreak on Los Angeles

A new map from nuclearsecrecy.com has laid bare the harrowing impact of a nuclear bomb detonation in Los Angeles , with swathes of the city predicted to be wiped out. The map , developed with insights from nuclear historian Alex Wellerstein of the Stevens Institute of Technology, showcases the potential destruction nuclear explosions could wreak on major cities globally.

Should a bomb as powerful as the "Castle Bravo" the mightiest nuclear device the US has ever tested, in Los Angeles, the consequences would be dire, with a yield of 15,000 kilotons.

According to Wellerstein's expert simulations, a staggering 2,331,190 people could be killed in such a catastrophe. Furthermore, the projections estimate that an additional 4,074,420 individuals would sustain injuries, while the light blast damage, a s shown in this map , could stretch as far as Santa Clarita.

According to Wellerstein's map, light blast damage is defined as: "At around 1 psi overpressure, glass windows can be expected to break. This can cause many injuries in a surrounding population who comes to a window after seeing the flash of a nuclear explosion (which travels faster than the pressure wave). Often used as a benchmark for light damage in cities. Optimal height of burst to maximize this effect is 11,520 m ."

The devastation in the immediate vicinity of the bomb would be catastrophic, as illustrated by this map. The inner yellow ring on the map indicates that anything inside the fireball radius would be vaporized.

The grey ring signifies moderate blast damage, which could cause widespread facilities, universal injuries, and the collapse of most buildings.

Fortunately, these scenarios are purely hypothetical, and the likelihood of such weapons being deployed remains slim.
