'My new roommate's mom has been living with us for a week without my permission'

An individual shared their story about dealing with an odd and awkward situation after a new housemate's parent overextended their stay .

"I live in a 3-bedroom, 1-bath apartment in NYC," the person started out. They had just found someone to fill an empty room in their flat, along with a mate.

Things turned peculiar when move-in day arrived for the new roomie. "This new roommate told us via text on the day of her move-in that her mom is staying over for a few days in the apartment to help her unpack," they said, detailing the events.

The woman and their friend thought the whole thing was quite strange. "We separately agreed it was a tad bit weird as we never had any of our parents stay overnight in our tiny NYC apartment," they confessed, questioning this uncommon living setup.

As time went on, the woman couldn't help feeling unnerved. "I asked the new roommate this past Monday for a timeline for how long we can expect her mom to stay with us, and she said 'til Friday," they mentioned.

Despite being slightly put off, initially, they accepted the arrangement, figuring they'd make do. "I was thinking in my head, ah okay... I guess I can let that be something to look forward to."

When Friday came and went without the roommate's mom leaving the apartment, the resident couldn't hide her irritation. "It is now past Friday, and her mom is still in our apartment," she remarked, clearly annoyed by the occurrence.

What aggravated her most was not being told about the prolonged stay, as she stated, "She didn't even communicate about the extension of the overstay."

Aware that living in NYC doesn't come cheap and not everyone might afford a hotel, she found the situation exacerbated by her roommate's initial promise that her mom would spend Friday night elsewhere with family friends. The woman recounted discussing the issue with a friend, agreeing that if the roommate's mother hadn't left by Monday, it was time for a conversation with the new roommate about communication and guest etiquette, "I communicated with my friend about this, and we agreed that if her mom is still here on Monday, we need to say something to the new roommate about communication and guests staying over," she revealed.

As the woman grappled with how to handle their unwelcome guest, she questioned the legitimacy of her own discomfort. "What are your thoughts? Am I crazy to feel uncomfortable about a parent overstaying? " she queried online, stressing the additional difficulty of trying to adapt to a new roommate when immediately faced with an additional, uninvited house guest.

Reddit users weighed in with support and advice, echoing her concerns.

A user sympathized, writing: "You are well within your rights to question why she's still there...I'm sure she's not contributing an extra dollar to cover her mother being a resident. Time to ask what's going on."

Another individual added: "Respectfully I say.... Grow a spine. Talk to your roommate. You should have been communicating this whole time. Learn to be assertive, it will serve you well."

A different person wrote: "There is probably something in your lease about how long guests can stay to avoid illegal tenants that then have to be evicted. In my lease, it's something like two consecutive weeks."

Another person suggested: "Check your lease, some state that guests can not stay for a certain amount of time. If not, then say your landlord noticed/heard about someone staying there longer than agreed."
