Imane Khelif has secured a hefty payday in the women's welterweight boxing final , despite the fact the Algerian boxer's participation has been under scrutiny after she previously failed a gender eligibility test .

Khelif went head-to-head with Chinese boxer Yang Liu on Friday in the Olympic final and was victorious, meaning she's won a payday of $100,000 , as reported by EssentiallySports.

Half of this prize money goes directly to the athlete, while the remaining half is divided between the country's boxing federation and the coach.

However, the prize money is reportedly being awarded by the International Boxing Association (IBA), the same body that previously disqualified Khelif from competing after she failed a gender eligibility test . Khelif and Lin Yu-ting of Chinese Taipei were both expelled from the 2023 World Championships, overseen by the IBA, for failing this test, but have since been permitted to compete in the Olympics under the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Lin, whose Olympic participation has also been questioned, is also vying for a gold medal in the featherweight division against Poland's Julia Szeremeta on Saturday.

Khelif's journey in Paris attracted attention after her match against Angela Carini ended in just 46 seconds, with the Italian fighter quitting the bout and collapsing to her knees in tears, having declined to shake Khelif's hand. She later stated that she had never been hit so hard by anyone before.

Carini subsequently apologized to Khelif for not shaking her hand.

The Algerian secured her spot in the final by defeating Thai boxer Janjaem Suwannapheng. However, following her quarter-final victory over Hungarian Luca Anna Hamori, she was moved to tears by her achievement, before proclaiming: "I am a woman" in the ring.

"I couldn't control my nerves," Khelif admitted after her win against Hamori. Because after the media frenzy and after the victory, there was a mix of joy and at the same time, I was greatly affected because honestly, it wasn't an easy thing to go through at all. It was something that harms human dignity. ".
