A woman from Johnson City has been charged with attempted murder after she allegedly drove her car into a lake with her toddler inside .

Kalyna Young, 21, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after she reportedly intentionally drove the car into Boone Lake on Saturday Afternoon.

The incident has also seen Young charged with felony reckless endangerment, driving under the influence and aggravated child abuse, as well as neglect, a Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) news release reports.

The report also details that neither Young or the toddler were harmed and that the child has been released into the care of a relative. An affidavit from Deputy Jason Hammonds has detailed how he responded to reports of a vehicle crash at 674 Oak Grove Road and upon his arrival discovered that a vehicle was submerged with a child possibly trapped inside.

Deputy Hammonds entered the water where started hitting the driver’s door with his baton, but witnesses then yelled to him that both the child and the driver were on land and safe. An EMS worker arrived at the scene and checked over Young and her daughter giving them medical clearance.

The EMS technician then told Hammonds that Young had confessed to him that she had intentionally driven into the lake. They claimed that she said: “I’m going through a lot right now, and I just want to be with my daughter and God.”

Following the exchange with the EMS worker Hammonds then followed up with Young having a conversation with her himself. He wrote that she also confirmed to him what she had told the medic and that she went on to confess to him that she had drunk a “Steel beverage” (a higher-alcohol malt liquor).

Young told Hammonds that she had purchased the drink from a gas station around an hour earlier before she drove the car into the lake. Hammonds reported that he had found two Steel cans inside the vehicle. Following the incidents officials made a referral to the Department of Children’s Services. The toddler was then taken and given to her grandmother to be cared for.

The news release also details how witnesses to the incident had managed to pull both Young and the toddler out of the car shortly before the deputies arrived at the scene. Young is now being held without bond at the Washington County Detention Center with an initial court appearance scheduled for Monday afternoon.
