Swimming sensation Daniel Wiffen is reportedly "a lot better" following his hospital scare in Paris over the weekend.

The 23-year-old was rushed to hospital just days after competing in the Olympic 10k race , which took place in the River Seine.

His father Jonathan provided an update on his condition on Tuesday, revealing that Daniel went straight to bed after returning from Monday's homecoming in Dublin .

"He's a lot better now," said Jonathan on RTE's Morning Ireland. "He's up and about this morning, he's eating and drinking so he's a lot better, but it'll take a few days to get over it I think."

He added, "All the doctors have been very good with him," Belfast Live reported.

The Co Armagh swimmer had a fantastic Games in Paris, winning the 800m freestyle at La Defense Arena and securing a bronze medal in the 1500m freestyle, earning his first Olympic medals.

Wiffen made history by becoming the first Irishman to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming and due to his achievements in the pool, he was chosen to carry Team Ireland's flag in the closing ceremony at the Stade de France on Sunday.

Sadly for the Olympian, he was forced to pull out just hours before the event after he became "very unwell", a common issue among athletes who'd swam in the Seine during the Games, with serious concerns being raised over fears of high levels of Enterococci - an indicator of faecal pollution in the water.

Despite Olympic organisers spending a hefty £1.2million to decontaminate the Seine and implementing daily checks for pollutants, swimmer Wiffen was among several competitors who became sick after participating in Friday's 10K open water event. This group included Canadian triathlete Tyler Wislawchuk, who was seen throwing up on live television post-race.

Wiffen took to social media to express gratitude for the support he received and to update fans on his condition after receiving treatment for a "bug". "Thanks everyone who reached out, I'm incredibly disappointed to miss out on the opportunity to be flag bearer last night," he posted on X.

"Yesterday I rushed to hospital as I was very unwell with a bug that I am being treated for, and am feeling better now. I hope everyone enjoys the evening and I hope to be well enough to seeing everyone when we get home."
