She found an interim doubles partner in Giuliana Olmos during the Canadian Open last week, where they bowed out in the quarter-finals. However, Pegula didn't leave empty-handed as she triumphed in the singles competition, defending the title she secured the previous year.
With regard to her future in doubles, 30-year-old Pegula expressed uncertainty, revealing: "For me, I'm not sure."
Pegula elaborated on the choice to go separate ways, stating, "I know Coco doesn't really, isn't interested in playing, or at least I'm not, we're not thinking of playing, so I probably will take it easy on the doubles the rest of the year, so, yeah, we'll see."
The world No. 6 plans to use this chance to give precedence to her singles career, sharing her lighthearted approach: "I think I'll just play maybe whenever I kind of want to," she chuckled.
"And maybe just focus on singles the rest of the year."
While Pegula joined the doubles fray in Toronto, Gauff limited herself exclusively to singles. She also indicated a pause from doubles competition in the near future.
"No, I'm not going to be playing doubles," the 20-year-old declared in Canada.
"I just, the goal was to try to get as good as possible for the Olympics and then, yeah. Every week, week-in and week-out, I'm making the end of the week, if I'm playing singles and doubles usually I'm there at the semis at least in one event. Yeah, it's just tough to go week-in and week-out on tour, so that's the reason why. But maybe next year I'll play here and there. I won't be playing doubles as consistently as I have been in the past."
Pegula and Gauff were open about their ambition to compete for a medal at the Olympics. As one of the few top doubles teams made up of players from the same nation, they had a strong chance.
They were the top seeds in the women's doubles draw but they suffered a surprise second-round defeat to Linda Noskova and Karolina Muchova. The American pair found it difficult to prepare for the Games this year and only managed to play six tournaments together before heading to Paris due to Pegula being out with an injury.
During her layoff, Gauff partnered with Katerina Siniakova to win the French Open back in May.
