A movie about the life of late celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain is in the works and a fellow New Jersey native is set to play him, but fans of the icon don't seem too pleased .

Deadline reported on Monday that New Jersey actor Dominic Sessa will take on the role of Bourdain in a film titled, Tony.

21-year-old Sessa will play a young Bourdain, at the beginning of his career, cooking his way through New York restaurants. Bourdain went from a normal working chef to having international fame and status when his writing revealed the ugly secrets of life in a kitchen.

  • Fans are divided about the project which is said to be in its early stages and has released very little information so far. Some fans are less than pleased about the news, disappointed that Bourdain has ‘fallen victim’ to a genre of film that memorializes celebrities in a strange and often unrealistic way. Bourdain was known to be a complex and multifaceted individual and fans seem worried that a film will not be able to encapsulate this.

One user, @Haggardbones wrote on X: “I don’t know about the Bourdain biopic. Obviously I didn't know the man, but if there’s one dude I feel like would 1000 percent not want a movie made about him, it’s him.”

Others seemed to echo that sentiment, particularly because Bourdain’s personality was captured so authentically in his multiple food series', including No Reservations and Parts Unknown.

Bourdain struggled throughout his life with serious mental health problems. He also battled substance abuse issues and died by suicide in 2018.
