Costco has disappointed shoppers after they replaced a certain brand of chocolate chips with another , less favorable brand, according to social media.

Costco formerly stocked Kirkland Signature chocolate chips - which seemed to be a fan favorite. Shoppers noticed that Costco’s own-brand Kirkland product has been replaced with Nestle at the store. One user took to Reddit to share their disappointment, allowing others to chime in.

“They completely replaced the chocolate chips with Nestle,” wrote u/SomeRealTomfoolery in r/Costco. They shared a picture of a rack of Nestlé Toll House Semi-Sweet Morsels in 72-ounce bags in their local Costco store.

The post instantly elicited reactions with more than 500 reactions and 160 comments. One Reddit user wrote: “whaaaaaat. I literally just bought these for the first time ever and love them!” to which another replied, “They are seriously the best chocolate chip ever.”

Some commenters were particularly upset with Costco’s choice of replacement brand. Nestle has faced backlash in the past for sourcing its cocoa from unethical suppliers, using child labor, and paying their cocoa farmers unfairly.

One frustrated user contacted Costco directly, and received a reply detailing why they have done away with the shoppers’ favorite treat. The company blamed the ‘rising cost of cocoa’ adding, “the cost our suppliers were presenting to us, would no longer make our Kirkland Signature Chocolate Chips a value against other brands like Nestle Toll House.”

The Kirkland brand ingredient has also been removed from the Costco website.
