Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has raised concerns regarding Mason Mount's future at Old Trafford and made comparisons to Donny van de Beek's ill-fated time at the club.

Following a big-money, £60 million transfer from Chelsea to United last summer, Mount has failed to live up to the hype , racking up just 14 appearances last season due to frequent injuries.

Meulensteen, who was part of Sir Alex Ferguson's coaching staff, expressed fears that Mount may not adapt well to Erik ten Hag's tactics , drawing parallels to Van de Beek's situation.

He told Gambling Zone: "Mason Mount is in a bit of a similar situation to Donny van de Beek at Manchester United ," adding, "Sometimes when you stick to a certain system, it's hard to fit certain players and I fear he could be the new Donny and his career could fade at United."

Despite Ten Hag's attempts to utilize him in different midfield positions, Mount has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot, prompting Meulensteen to suggest he might be playing out of position.

Meulensteen emphasized Mount's ideal role in an interview, saying: "With Mason Mount, he is not really a six or not really a winger, you want him as an advanced eight," pointing out, "The way to do it is to play with one six and two eights or two tens. He is good on the transition and winning the ball back for counter attacks, he is so quick and agile and he showed that at Chelsea."

Meulensteen, who's part of the coaching team for Australia, has weighed in on Mount's challenge at Manchester United, given Bruno Fernandes' form. "You can even say the same about Christian Eriksen, although he has more experience, because they are basically all playing in Bruno Fernandes' area of the pitch," he remarked.

"Bruno has been such an important player for United and with goals and assists and energy so the others are going to find it hard to get into their best position."

Mount's situation at Manchester is being compared to Van de Beek's less-than-stellar stint, which could be a cause for concern. The Dutch midfielder's time at United was marked by a £40million transfer in August 2020, but after only 62 appearances, injuries, and lacklustre performances, he left the club.

With just two goals to his name at United, Van de Beek was loaned out to Everton for the latter half of the 2021/22 season, followed by a spell at Eintracht Frankfurt in January this year. After making a mere 15 appearances during these loans, his United chapter closed with a permanent move to Girona in Spain come July.
