A Netflix western starring Liam Neeson has earned a high accuracy rating from an Old West historian .

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs was created by the Coen Brothers for Netflix in 2018. The anthology is comprised of six short films or ‘vignettes,’ which chronicle different aspects of life on the American frontier after the Civil War.

In a recent interview with Insider, real-life cowboy Michael Grauer discussed a scene from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and analyzed its historical accuracy, grading it out of 10.

“I’d call it a seven,” he said. “They’re poking fun - gentle fun, to be sure - at the singing cowboy films of the ‘30s and ‘40s.”

Grauer pointed out that the saloon scenes were generally quite accurate, particularly their depiction of the ‘criminal element.’ He added: “You did have saloon fights, that part is true, and in some cases someone might pull out a concealed weapon. Sometimes. Most of the time it was with fists, and they didn’t last that long. You didn’t have the great scenes like you see where everyone is punching everybody else, punching furniture and so on. It was usually just a couple of people.”

In the third chapter, titled Meal Ticket, Liam Neeson plays the role of Impressario - a promoter of a traveling show which showcases a man with no limbs. Impressario is money-hungry and his character highlights the predatory nature of show business. The Irish actor was praised for his role in the film back in the early days of its release.

Grauer also called Tim Blake Nelson who played well-dressed cowboy Buster Scruggs "hysterical" saying that "nobody dressed like that."

Each episode varied in accuracy and nature. It is generally agreed that the first two were comedic and the others were darker. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs faired well alongside other classic westerns like The Searches which got a score of 2, and The Good The Bad and The Ugly which received a 4.
