Air fryers, the contemporary kitchen appliance designed to cook food by circulating hot air around it , are akin to a health-conscious version of deep frying but with significantly less oil involved. But are they dangerous?

This handy gadget uses a mechanical fan to distribute the heat evenly, achieving a crispy exterior for your food while maintaining a tender interior.

Recently, air fryers have been selling like hotcakes due to their ability to facilitate healthier cooking. By using minimal or no oil, air fryers offer lower-fat versions of our favorite fried foods and assist in reducing calorie intake.

Not only can they be quicker, simpler and less troublesome than traditional deep frying or lengthy oven roasting, there has also been some discussion about their safety.

Rumors circulating on social media suggest that the materials used in air fryers could be harmful. Some users have even claimed they're "DNA altering", although there doesn't appear to be any evidence to support this, according to the Daily Record.

However, one doctor has clarified the situation on TikTok - stating that it should only concern you if your air fryer is faulty. Dr Karan Raj said that the "biggest concern centres around the non-stick materials, also known as 'forever chemicals'"

He disclosed: "Well, fun fact, every time you sit down to eat, microplastics float from the air and land in your food, or are already part of your food, invisibly becoming part of your stir fry."

Dr Raj has addressed concerns about air fryers, stating that the risk of toxic chemicals leeching into food is mainly an issue if the appliance's material is damaged.

"Now when it comes to air fryers, the worries about toxic chemicals leeching into your food is only really an issue if the material is damaged, so as long as you don't plan to eat the lining of your air fryer, you'll be fine. Just try to minimize how much damage and scratching there is to the non-stick coating," he explained.

He advised owners to "clean it safely" and steer clear of abrasive cleaning materials. Instead, he recommended using "wood or silicone utensils" and "liners".

For those still concerned about non-stick coatings, Dr Raj suggested opting for a "ceramic or stainless steel air fryer".His advice was met with relief in the comments section, with one person expressing gratitude: "Ugh thank you for sharing, I'm so tired of fear-mongering".
