Elvis Presley's Graceland upstairs bedroom and bathroom preserved 'like he got up and left'

Elvis Presley's home has been a public museum for over four decades , but the upstairs remains off-limits to visitors. The only exceptions are Priscilla Presley, his granddaughter Riley Keough, or those with special permission like Graceland's Vice President of Archives and Exhibits Angie Marchese.

Even when Elvis first moved into Graceland in 1957, he was mindful of maintaining his privacy. The Memphis mansion held an open house for his family and close friends, but access to the upstairs was by invitation only.

The globally renowned singer even installed a security wall with a one-way mirror on the first-floor landing, complete with security cameras so he could see who was downstairs, reports the Express .

The upstairs of Graceland houses Elvis' office, his dressing room, his daughter Lisa Marie's room, as well as his bedroom and the bathroom where he tragically died of a heart attack at the age of 42 on August 16, 1977, 47 years ago today. As it was Elvis' private space during his life, it continues to be so after his death.

However, Angie has given some insight into what it's like up there, as her role involves preserving The King's private quarters rooms that the late Lisa Marie described as the safest place in the world for her.

During an Instagram Q&A from Graceland, the archivist revealed that Elvis Presley's upstairs area has remained untouched since 1977, explaining: "It looks as if he just got up and left. It is part of my job to maintain it. So we do go up there to maintain the space. The record on the record player is the last record he listened to. There's a styrofoam cup that sits on a bookshelf. The bed is made, so we really maintain it the way that Lisa wants us to preserve it. So, unfortunately, [fans] can't see it, but it is taken care of."
