The islands off the west coast of Ireland are some of the most beautiful places in the world that you can explore. And these three islands off the coast of Co Galway are no exception.

The Aran Islands are three rocky islands in Galway Bay . For a number of reasons, they make for a popular tourist destination and definitely should not be overlooked when you're visiting Ireland.

Take a break from your drive on the Wild Atlantic Way to travel out to these islands and you won't regret it. On a warm summer's day, exploring this scenic part of the world makes for an unforgettable experience.

    Getting to the Aran Islands

The Aran Islands are accessible by ferries that depart from Rossaveal Harbour, which is a 35-minute drive from Galway City. There are three islands that makeup the Aran Islands, Inis Mor (Inishmore), Inis Meain (Inishmaan), and Inis Oirr (Inisheer).

    A true taste of Ireland

Stepping onto the Aran Islands somewhat feels like stepping back in time. Gaeilge (Irish) is the primary language here and is used over English.

Meanwhile, the traditional cottages dotted around the islands and the sheer remoteness of their locality really give you a feeling that you're worlds away from Irish cities such as Galway and Dublin .

One thing is for sure when you visit the Aran Islands: you won't struggle to find Irish culture here in the form of language, music, food, and hospitality.

The best things to do on the Aran Islands

The Aran Islands are a favourite among tourists for good reason, with plenty to see and do.

For those who enjoy staying active, cycling around the islands offers some truly breathtaking views. One such sight is Synge's Chair, a spectacular lookout point on the edge of a sheer limestone cliff on Inishmaan island.

Inisheer is home to Tobar Einne (Sacred Well), a site still frequented by local pilgrims. Other must-see spots on the Aran Islands include the ancient ruins at Dun Aonghasa, the beautiful Kilmurvey Beach, Na Seacht Teampaill (The Seven Churches), and O'Brien's Castle.

    Visiting the Aran Islands

There are several tour packages available that include trips to the Aran Islands. If you're based in Dublin, consider booking the 3-Day Cliffs of Moher, Connemara, and Aran Islands Rail Tour.

Alternatively, the Aran Islands and Cliffs of Moher Day Cruise depart from Galway City Docks, courtesy of Aran Island Ferries.
