People urged to keep windows closed for 'at least six weeks'

Irish residents are receiving clear instructions to keep their windows tightly shut "at all times" throughout the day and night for the upcoming six weeks .

This guidance might come somewhat easier given the less-than-stellar weather predictions, with a dreary outlook of persistent rainfall, bitter chill spells, and bouts of blustery winds on the horizon.

Interestingly, this window-closing advice has zilch to do with the gloomy forecast and everything to do with an unwelcome subject - spiders .

As if clockwork, each year around the same season, Ireland witnesses a surge in spider antics, leading to daily encounters with more sizable and active arachnids taking up residence in homes.

For those unbothered by these benign critters, this may not be cause for concern, however, some residents certainly aim to maintain spider-free abodes.

Fortunately, there's a simple preventive measure to escape these eight-legged visitors: keep your windows and doors firmly shut at all times, whether it's during the light of day or the dark of night.

In the summertime, open windows and doors may beckon a refreshing breeze to sweep through our living spaces but also serve as a welcoming entry for spiders and insects.

The time known as 'spider season' traditionally spans from mid-August to early October across Ireland and the UK, as reported by Express. The reason behind this seasonal spike?

Spider mating rituals, which see male spiders increase their prowling to find stationary female mates. After spending the spring and summer months feeding, they enter homes in search of females to mate with.

It might be wise to seal up any small gaps, like cracks in your window sills, floorboards, around your doors or in the bricks of your home. Spiders also find skirting boards and kickboards great places to hide.
