Hozier was visibly confused as a couple picked an unappropriate time to profess their love.

The Irish singer was in Madison, Wisconsin, when he decided to perform a fan-favorite song , Cherry Wine. While the melody has a calming feel, played simply on acoustic guitar, the words have a more violent nature.

Andrew Hozier-Byrne, who goes by the stage name Hozier , is known for writing music with difficult subject matter . Cherry Wine details an abusive relationship from the perspective of the victim, who excuses their partner's action due to love.

According to Genius, the tone is purposefully delicate, making it sound like a love song despite the sinister lyrics.

At the Madison show, he was performing the song when screams could be heard in the crowd. At first, Hozier stops playing to find the source of the screams, a TikTok of the event revealed.

“You guys okay? Hang on one second, that’s freaking me out. Are you okay?” he asked.

He then understood the crowd was excited, as a couple had just gotten engaged. He starts clapping, laughing at the fear he had just moments before.

Hozier said: “Congratulations, also on putting the fear of God in me. Well done.”

“Of all the songs as well too…” he said right before he continued singing.

Some of the lyrics include: “The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine/ Open hand or closed fist, oh, would be fine/ The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine.”
