New parents are falling head over heels for a modern Irish girl's name that translates to 'heart' . While there's no shortage of beautiful, timeless traditional Irish names , it seems the more contemporary ones are gaining traction.

Fresh data from the Irish Central Statistics Office reveals the most popular monikers in Ireland for 2023 , and it's clear some names are on the rise.

Among these is an enchanting Irish girl's name that's becoming increasingly popular - Croia. Derived from the Irish word 'croi', meaning 'heart', Croia (pronounced 'kree-ah') translates to 'little heart', a fitting name for a newborn lass.

In 2022, Croia was the 38th most popular choice for new Irish girls. However, by 2023, it had leapt to 23rd place, tying with the name Anna. Last year, 166 baby girls in Ireland were christened Croia, up from 140 in 2022.

But Croia isn't the only unique Irish girls' name making waves. Eala also saw a surge in popularity in 2023.

While you might hear this name in Ireland, it's unlikely to be heard across the pond in the US. In 2022, just 59 babies were named Eala, but by 2023, this number had jumped to 100.

Eala, pronounced 'ay-la', translates to 'swan' or 'noble'. It's a beautiful Irish name inspired by animals and wildlife, and also a regal choice for a little queen.

On the other hand, a unique variation of a traditional boys' name is gaining popularity. Paidi, pronounced the same as Paddy, was chosen for 41 more babies in 2023 compared to 2022, leaping from 109 to 150.
