Royal author Robert Lacey, in his book Battle of the Brothers, suggests that Kate was "wary of Meghan from the start" as a way of dealing with the growing tensions. William, on the other hand, felt that Meghan was 'stealing his beloved brother away from him', and suspected Meghan was 'hostile' to the Royal system.
Lacey also claims that the final straw for the former 'Fab Four' came when William was informed of bullying allegations against Meghan. Upon hearing claims that the Duchess had 'bullied' palace staff members, and after an unsuccessful phone call to discuss matters with his brother, William decided to 'throw Harry out' and separate their households, according to the author.
Lacey also mentioned a Kensington Palace insider stating: "Meghan portrayed herself as the victim, but she was the bully. People felt run over by her. They thought she was a complete narcissist and sociopath - basically unhinged."
Allegations of bullying against Meghan surfaced in March 2021, when The Times revealed that the Duchess had allegedly forced two aides out of Kensington Palace. According to The Times, a grievance against her was filed in October 2018, five months after her marriage to Prince Harry.
Its claimed by The Times that Jason Knauf, who worked as communications secretary for Harry and Meghan, alleged the Duchess "drove two personal assistants out of the household and was undermining the confidence of a third staff member".
He reportedly emailed Simon Case, Prince William's private secretary at the time, looking to get Buckingham Palace to intervene and shield the staff members Knauf described as being under "unbearable pressure from Meghan".
In the same article, it's said that Harry pleaded with Knauf not to proceed with the complaint during a meeting, a claim that the Sussexes' attorney insists never took place.
Nonetheless, shortly after these allegations came to light, Meghan outright denied any accusations of bullying, suggesting she was being tarred with a "calculated smear campaign". Her representatives issued a statement saying, "Let's just call this what it is - a calculated smear campaign based on misleading and harmful misinformation."
"We are disappointed to see this defamatory portrayal of the Duchess of Sussex given credibility by a media outlet. It's no coincidence that distorted several-year-old accusations aimed at undermining the duchess are being briefed to the British media shortly before she and the duke are due to speak openly and honestly about their experience of recent years."
