Rory McIlroy loses it in BMW Championship temper tantrum with violent move that sums up his game

Rory McIlroy showed his anger at the BMW Championship as he dramatically broke his driver during the final round , epitomizing his tough year on tour.

The scene where McIlroy angrily chucked his driver into the water off the 17th on Friday after a poor tee shot was rough enough. But then, picking up his tee on Sunday, he seemed to snap his club in dismay following another stray shot on the par four that ended up near a creek bank.

McIlroy chose not to switch out the broken driver, although Rule 4.1a(2) would have allowed him: "If a conforming club is damaged during a round or while play is stopped under Rule 5.7a, except in cases of abuse, the player may repair it or replace it with another club."

Amazingly, even down a driver and with feet in the creek, McIlroy produced a spectacular approach onto the green and managed a par save. Nonetheless, this did little to improve his standing as he crossed the halfway point over par, trailing far behind the leaders.

In a twist, Keegan Bradley, the U. S, Ryder Cup captain, clinched the BMW Championship victory, extending McIlroy's run of disappointing moments in 2024, including a near-miss for his fifth major at the U. S. Open where two missed putts during the endgame handed Bryson DeChambeau the win.

Despite not making the final cut at The Open and finishing fifth at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Rory McIlroy , who represented Ireland, remains hopeful. It's been ten years since the world No.

3 has clinched a major title, and he had set his sights on Olympic gold to alleviate his disappointment.

Ahead of the Games, McIlroy expressed his aspirations: "It would be the achievement of my year," acknowledging the decade-long gap since his last major win. "It's well documented that I haven't won one of the Big Four in 10 years. It would probably be one, if not the biggest in my career for the last decade."

He also pondered the significance of an Olympic medal in his career: "I've been asked this question a lot, where would an Olympic Medal sit in sort of the hierarchy of my career achievements and it's something I probably won't be able to answer until when everything is said and done," he remarked.

McIlroy believes that as golf continues to feature in the Olympics, its prestige will grow: "I think as golf is in the Olympics for a longer period of time, it will become bigger. We have our four events a year that are the gold standard, but in time, this is going to be right up there amongst that."

Looking ahead, McIlroy anticipates another opportunity at Olympic glory when the games move to America, his country of residence. However, he'll face the challenge of competing on the West Coast, far from his home in Florida .
