    Delta Airlines tire explosion at Atlanta facility kills two workers and injures one in 'heartbreaking' tragedy

    Two workers have been killed and another seriously injured after an explosion at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Atlanta airport.

    The deceased have been identified as Mirko F Marweg, 58, of Stone Mountain, and Luis Aldarondo, 37, of Newnan. Atlanta Fire units and police responded to the incident shortly after 5 am on Tuesday. An investigation into the cause of the explosion is ongoing . The condition of the third, injured worker is not currently known.

  • Delta expressed their “heartbreak” at losing two team members. They explained that the explosion occurred when the wheel components were being disassembled for maintenance at a wheel and brake shop. The airline said that the parts were not attached to a plane at the time and the explosion happened inside the wheel and brake shop.

    Atlanta airport said flights were not affected, and Delta said its maintenance operation was not impacted. The Federal Aviation Administration says they are aware of the incident and are in communication with Delta.
