Most popular baby names in US for 2023 revealed - with topical pick on top again

An Irish moniker has once again topped the list as the most popular boys' name in the US . The US' Social Security Administration recently unveiled the top baby names for both lads and lasses in the country from last year.

In 2023, an Irish lad's name once again took the crown. Last year, Liam was the favorite name for boys born in the US, which is fitting given Oasis' iconic return .

This isn't a shocker as Liam has nabbed the title before. Liam was also recently announced as the top name for boys born in the state of New York last year.

Liam was the only name of Irish origin to make it into the top ten most popular baby names for boys in the US in 2023. Noah and Oliver were in third place while James and Elijah were in fourth and fifth place.

The rest of the top ten was rounded out by Mateo, Theodore, Henry, Lucas, and William. The name Liam was bestowed upon 20,802 baby boys in the US last year.

That is compared to 18,995 babies named Noah last year. In terms of baby girl names, Olivia claimed the top spot.

There were no Irish names in the top ten list of most popular names for girls in the US in 2023. Olivia was followed by Emma, Charlotte, Amelia, Sophia, Mia, Isabella, Ava, Evelyn, and Luna.

On the boys' list, the next most popular Irish name for babies in 2023 was Aiden. That snagged the number 40 spot and was given to a total of 6,675 last year.

The name Liam has stood the test of time, remaining a favorite for decades. The moniker, which translates to 'strong-willed warrior' or 'protector', originates from the traditional Irish name Uilliam, meaning 'helmet of will'.
