Shane Lowry is poised for the largest payday of his career if he can deliver another solid round in the lucrative Tour Championship event - though he is facing some seriously stiff competition .

The FedEx Cup finale is golf's richest event , with the winner pocketing a staggering $25,000,000.

Scottie Scheffler appears to have first place all but secured with a commanding five-shot lead. However, even without lifting the trophy at East Lake, Lowry could still be in line for the biggest payday of his career.

Currently in eighth place, the 2019 Open Champion stands to earn a hefty $2.25m for his week's work. With just four shots separating him from third place, a strong final round could see his earnings rise to as much as $7.5m.

Lowry started the day in 13th place and made the turn in three-under-par after carding birdies on the third, sixth, and seventh holes. Despite a single blemish on the par four 12th, four birdies on the back nine saw him card a field-best six-under-par 65, moving him up to eighth place.

Rory McIlroy was also in action on Saturday and is two shots behind Lowry. A three-time winner of the FedEx Cup, McIlroy carded a three-under-par 68.

The Holywood man began the day with consecutive bogeys but recovered with a couple of birdies on the front nine. Four birdies and a bogey on the 16th resulted in McIlroy carding a three-under-par round, tying him for 10th place alongside Sunjae Im and Ludvig Aberg.
