Apalachee High School is on high alert after a shooter rampaged through the premises in Barrow County. Multiple emergency response units, from dozens of ambulances to officers and a medical chopper, have swarmed the school.

The medical helicopter was seen airlifting at least one individual on a stretcher . Local hospitals have started admitting victims suffering from gunshot injuries.

CNN reports that the tragedy has left at least four dead and 30 wounded , though it's unclear if those are all from gunshots. Barrow County Sheriffs Office has taken a suspect into custody post-shooting.

In their statement, the sheriff's office acknowledged casualties without providing specifics: "Casualties have been reported, however details on the number or their conditions are not available at this time."

Parents are turning to social media for updates and support. A distressed Brittany Lewis posted on Facebook: "Active shooter is at my kid's school Apalachee High School one has been reported shot I don't know if it's a teacher or student."

Pleading further she said: "I'm on the school ground law enforcement is here please pray for us they won't let me in to my children please pray for us please."

Governor Brian Kemp stepped up, declaring the mobilisation of "all available state resources" to aid the beleaguered school, with the FBI also stepping in to assist.

Tony Thomas, speaking for FBI Atlanta, confirmed their involvement: "FBI Atlanta is aware of the situation at Apalachee High School. Our agents are on site, working in coordination with and supporting local law enforcement."

This kid was on the FBI's radar for 18 months. Even visited his house. His dad said at the time that they had guns for hunting, but this kid didn't use them without supervision. Then FBI left. Let that sink in. This was preventable!
