Apalachee High School student describes the 'screams' amid terrifying school shooting

An Apalachee High School student has described the terrifying shooting which erupted on Wednesday morning. The Georgia high school was placed under strict lockdown after an “active shooter” situation on the grounds.

Apalachee High School in Winder, Barrow County, about 50 miles from Atlanta, relayed multiple reports of gunfire. A harrowing video was taken at the scene, showing students running from the premises .

A suspect is in custody, police say. The shooter has not been identified . Senior Sergio Caldera said he was in chemistry class when he heard gunshots.

"My teacher goes and opens the door to see what’s going on," the 17-year-old told ABC news. "Another teacher comes running in and tells her to close the door because there’s an active shooter ."

His teacher bolted the door shut and the students ran to the back of the room. Screams were heard from outside as they "huddled up," Caldera said.

The teen said at some point, someone thumped on the door of the classroom, shouting "open up!" several times. When the knocking subsided, more gunshots and screams were heard , according to Caldera.

His class later evacuated to the football field. Meanwhile, the local community is rapidly sharing updates about the situation across various social media channels .

Brittany Lewis expressed her concern on Facebook, stating: "Active shooter is at my kid's school Apalachee High School one has been reported shot I don't know if it's a teacher or student .

"I'm on the school ground law enforcement is here please pray for us they won't let me in to my children please pray for us please."

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting. Agents from the FBI and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are at the scene.
