Meet the Irish designer who is dressing Chappell Roan from his bedroom in Dublin

As the summer winds down and school starts again, few young people have experienced a summer quite like young Dublin designer Oran O’Reilly, who watched his summer project worn on stage by the world's biggest pop star right now .

The 20-year-old is a rising star in the fashion design world, having already created pieces for pop icon Chappell Roan, Irish singer CMAT and Siobhan McSweeney from Derry Girls, to name just a few. Though his talent is undeniable, Oran feels as though luck is responsible for a lot of his success.

“I truly believe that I am the luckiest person in the world, after the way everything has worked out,” he said.

“Fashion was always on the peripheral,” he explained. “It never seemed like something I would be able to pursue as a career. I wanted to be a playwright for years. Then, I was filling in my CAO form and I put drama in Trinity as my number one and I got denied… So I kind of went, ‘well what do I want to do now?’ I was at a standstill with like three weeks left of the CAO. And I had to ask myself what I actually wanted.”

While discovering his gift may have been happenstance, everything that came after was down to hard work and refined skill. After months of sharing his work on social media and using his friends as models, Oran got a message from a stylist who asked if he would be interested in creating a custom piece for American singer Chappell Roan.

“Everything aligned perfectly," he said. "I had just finished all of my college assignments so I was free. So I made it in my bedroom, used my mom as a fit model, sent it off to America and a few weeks later it was worn by her.”

Just like pop music's new it-girl, Oran is also enjoying a meteoric rise to success. Despite this, his surroundings have stayed the same.

“It’s always weird when I’m making these pieces. Because yes, it’s for Chappell Roan but I’m making it in my room. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t stress about who it’s for when I’m making it. But then when I get to see it on the person, the excitement comes back up again.”

While he's enjoying the recent support, Oran’s only worry is that he won’t get enough time to keep up with the new demand as he returns to college this September. Still hardly believing his luck with the people he has been able to design pieces for thus far, Oran wants to keep ‘speaking things into existence,’ and has a clear list.

“Ethel Cain is my favorite artist of all time,” he said. “As a fan of her's I get excited when I see her wearing a cool outfit. So I hope that when I work with people, their fans like what I do and the outfit I made for them.”
