McDonald's is making a major change to a menu favorite after shaking up item just last year

The McFlurry is getting a makeover. The ice cream treat from McDonald’s will soon come in the regular size customers know and love, as well as a new mini size. Customers can buy the dainty dessert starting Sept. 10.

This comes as the fast food chain made a major revamp to its menu. The Maccies’ menu debuted in the UK this summer, but it was removed on Tuesday.

The new mini McFlurry will be available throughout the US, a news release said. The company also made changes to the beloved treat’s packaging, making it more environmentally friendly.

McDonald’s has decided to phase out the plastic McFlurry cup lids. Instead, the cups will have a four-flap lid, helping to reduce waste.

This is in accordance with the company’s goal of sourcing 100% of guest packing from renewable, recycled or certified materials by the end of 2025.

Michael Gonda, chief impact officer of North America for McDonald's, said: “Packaging updates like this matter. Not only is this a fun new way for our U.S. fans to enjoy the McFlurry; we're also moving one step closer to fulfilling our packaging and waste commitments.”

These four-flap cups already exist in Canada and Indonesia, and now they will be making their debut in the US.

Last year, McDonald’s got rid of the iconic rectangular McFlurry spoons in order to use less plastic. They now come with smaller black spoons.
