A 6-year-old Californian boy has died after allegedly being beaten to death by his babysitter , with a piece of lumber.

Ernest Lamar Love, 41, is facing charges of murder, torture and child abuse causing death. According to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Love beat Chance Crawford to death, while babysitting him. Love has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to prosecutors, Love, who works as a barber, was babysitting Chance last Thursday while the boy’s mother worked the night shift as a nurse’s assistant at the hospital. Chance’s mother apparently met the suspect at church, KABC reports. He is accused of beating the 6-year-old with a piece of lumber, pouring hydrogen peroxide on his open wounds and making him do push-ups, sit-ups and jumping jacks.

  • Prosecutors believe that Love began beating Chance after the little boy peed his pants at the park. He then carried the 6-year-old to the emergency room at around 1:30am. Doctors say the boy was unconscious, suffering from raw wounds and had brain swelling and bleeding consistent with violent shaking.

In a press release, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said: “Words do not exist to describe the absolute terror this little boy was forced to endure - all at the hands of someone who was supposed to be protecting him, not torturing him to death.”

Love is currently being held without bail. He faces a maximum sentence of 32 years to life plus five years if convicted on all charges, according to prosecutors.
