    Irish victims of 9/11 remembered on 23rd anniversary of New York tragedy

    Seven Irish-born victims died during the September 11, 2001 , terrorist attacks. The attack claimed 2,977 lives, many of whom were Irish-American as well as Irish-born.

    During a ceremony in 2023 , there were six moments of silence throughout the morning at 8:46 am when Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower; at 9:03 am when Flight 175 hit the South Tower; at 9:37 am when Flight 77 hit the Pentagon; at 9:59 am when the South Tower collapsed; at 10:03 am when flight 93 crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania and at 10:28 am when the North Tower collapsed.

    The Irish Star remembers the Irish-born victims of the terrorist attacks.

    Kieran Joseph Gorman

    Kieran Gorman, from Co Sligo , was working on the 95th floor of the North Tower. He moved to New York in 1993 and worked as a mason tender with Structure Tone.

    The 35-year-old lived in Yonkers with his wife Anne and two children. He was expecting his third child at the time. His youngest son, who was born after his death, was named Kieran in his honor.

    Kieran was a fan of Gaelic football and soccer. Today, a car-mounted Sligo flag and Gaelic football are in the 9/11 Museum in his memory.

    Joanne Mary Cregan.

    Joanne Mary Cregan, a Dublin native, was employed by Cantor Fitzgerald and was on the 105th floor of the North Tower when the hijacked plane struck. She relocated to New York in 1992 and resided in Brooklyn .

    Joanne, aged 32, had strong connections to New York as three of her mother's brothers lived there. Her sister Grace followed her to the US shortly after.

    Grace, Joanne's sister, was working in the South Tower on the day of 9/11 and managed to escape. After the attack, Grace returned to Ireland before eventually moving back to New York.

    The mother and daughter were on United Airlines Flight 175 which crashed into the South Tower. They were en route to California for a trip to Disneyland.

    Ruth, aged 45, was born in Co Cork . She settled in New London, Connecticut with her husband David McCourt. They welcomed their daughter Juliana on May 4, 1997.

    Paige Farley-Hackel, Ruth's friend and Juliana's godmother, was supposed to meet them in California. She was on the plane that hit the north tower of the World Trade Center and also perished.

    Patrick Joseph Currivan

    Patrick Joseph Currivan, a Dubliner, was a vice president of the French firm Atos Euronet. The 52-year-old was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11.

    He resided in Winchester, Massachusetts . He was traveling to California and made a stop in Boston to meet friends from Trinity College Dublin.

    Martin John Coughlan.

    Martin John Coughlan, a carpenter by trade, was working on the 92nd floor of the South Tower. He was employed as a contractor with Aon Corporation, representing the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

    Originally from Cappawhite, Co Tipperary, he moved to the US in the 1980s. He resided in Bayside, Queens with his wife and four daughters.

    Jeremy 'Caz' Carrington.

    Known as Caz, Jeremy Carrington worked as a trader for Cantor Fitzgerald and was located on the 105th floor of the North Tower.

    Born in Downpatrick, Co Down, the 34-year-old lived in Brooklyn with his wife. He tied the knot in September 2000 and was set to celebrate his first wedding anniversary shortly after his untimely death.

    He had previously survived an attack on the World Trade Center. He was working in the North Tower when a bomb detonated on February 26, 1993.
