A Philadelphia police officer has tragically passed away almost three months after being shot in the neck during a routine vehicle stop.

Officer Jaime Roman spent 80 gruelling days in intensive care without ever regaining consciousness . The 31-year-old sadly died on Tuesday night. Roman leaves behind a grieving wife, a daughter, aged seven, and a son, aged four.

Roman had been in the department for nearly seven years. Police Commissioner Kevin J. Bethel said: "It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the loss of Officer Jaime Roman, a dedicated and courageous member of our department .

"Jaime's unwavering commitment to serving and protecting our community was an inspiration to us all . His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time."

The driver was removing personal items from the vehicle in the city's Kensington neighbourhood on June 22 when Roman spotted an empty holster on the floorboard, the department revealed.

The driver, identified as Ramon Rodriguez Vazquez, 36, of Philadelphia , then fled the scene, prompting Roman and his partner to give chase. Rodriguez Vazquez "then turned and fired three shots," striking Roman, police reported.

Roman's partner returned fire before rushing to his partner's aid. Roman remained in intensive care at Temple University Hospital until he succumbed to his injuries on the evening of Tuesday , September 10.

Rodriguez Vazquez forced entry into a nearby home, where he was subsequently arrested by police . Murder charges will be brought against Rodriguez Vazquez.

Darn shame! My heart goes out to this family and my prayers go up for all the police officers out here doing their job to protect n serve our sometimes ungrateful community. May the lord bless his wife, his children, his family with comfort and peace.
