McDonald's extends $5 value meal deal across US stores - but customers should be quick if they want to catch it

McDonald's is extending its $5 value meal until December. The move, which will take place at most stores across the US , has been made to boost traffic with a budget-friendly option that rivals are very likely to follow .

A disappointing first quarter that saw fewer US visits and lower spending per order , particularly from foodies earning less than $45,000 per year, sparked the introduction of the deal in June.

The bargain munch includes a McDouble burger or McChicken sandwich , small fries, a four-piece Chicken McNuggets and a small drink.

"Together with our franchisees, we're committed to keeping our prices as affordable as possible ," Joe Erlinger, McDonald's US President, said last week.

With grocery price inflation slowing, more people are deciding against dining out. US restaurant sales spiked slightly in July , according to the US Census Bureau, but that was a lot to do with higher menu prices.

US visits to McDonald's rose 2.4 per cent in June after the $5 meal deal was introduced , according to Placer.ai, and has remained high ever since.

In comparison, Taco Bell experienced a 12.3 per cent increase in foot traffic during the week of July 29 when it offered free drinks to mark 20 years of its Baja Blast.

More deals will be on offer at McDonald's this fall, including free medium fries every Friday with a $1 minimum purchase and $1 10-piece Chicken McNuggets between Nov 4 and December 2.

It unveiled Breakfast Snack Wraps, which is reminiscent of the Snack Wrap that was discontinued over seven years ago. The wraps come in three flavors, according to Snackolater.
