Rory McIlroy, the golfer from Northern Ireland, has seen his net worth increase by 12.5 per cent this year , making him the wealthiest individual under 40 in the region .

The Sunday Times Rich List reported that as of May this year , the world number three's personal wealth was around $299million (€267m), a significant rise from $262million (€237m) in 2023.

One of McIlroy's notable victories between the publication of the 2023 and 2024 lists was the Scottish Open, where he bagged $1.79m (€1.5m). It is believed that the Holywood man has earned over $95m (€77m) on the course.

However, his earnings from sponsorship deals with brands like Nike, Omega, TaylorMade and others far exceed this. McIlroy, a three-time FedEx Cup and four-time Race to Dubai/DP World Tour Rankings winner, has also won four majors in his career.

He has previously been sponsored by Titleist, FootJoy, Jumeirah and EA Sports. When this year's Sunday Times Rich List was published, McIlroy had just filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll, but the couple have since called off their plans to separate.

Robert Watts, who compiles the Sunday Times rich list, told the Irish News: "We don't change the valuation of someone until after a divorce is finalized, but one would expect that will reduce his wealth at some point."

He added: "I was very struck by how much he earns away from the golf course, it is significantly more lucrative. That was certainly the case with other sports stars like the tennis player Emma Radacanu."

Rising to the challenge at the Irish Open on Thursday, Rory McIlroy has placed himself firmly amongst contenders, starting out only two shots behind the leader, Todd Clements. On top of that, he's set for an appearance on the Late Late Show this Friday night.

The 35-year-old golfer stands to boost his earnings significantly with a win at Royal County Down, as the prize cheque for the winner is a handsome €920,000.
