Rumors about a sequel to the beloved 1985 film The Goonies have been circulating for years, but recent reports have stirred up fresh excitement.

Earlier this month, The Sun reported that there was a sequel in the works at Warner Bros, with plans to start filming next summer. They gave a potential release date of 2026 or early 2027, sparking excitement among fans.

The report suggested that many of the original cast members would return for the sequel. However actors Corey Feldman and Martha Plimpton, who starred in the original Goonies film , have come forward to deny the claims. Feldman took to social media to say that a sequel is not on the cards, or at least he hasn’t been told about it.

  • He wrote: “I can officially tell you 100% no! I have no info that a sequel is in the works.”

Plimpton echoed this, writing on Instagram, “Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real.”

While rumors of a sequel have been circulating for years, they were put on pause after the original director of T he Goonies, Richard Donner, passed away in 2021 at the age of 91. The rest of the cast is also significantly older, so a sequel would have to take place far in the future, or perhaps involve a new cast of adventurous kids.

Fans are still holding out hope for a sequel, with actor Sean Astin, who played Mikey, leading the petition for the movie to come to life. He recently stoked the fire by sharing a fan-made movie poster for Goonies: 2, and writing: “It’s our time… C’mon Steven.”
