Jon Rahm defends LIV Golf amid criticism from big names in golf world

Jon Rahm has silenced detractors of LIV Golf , suggesting they're too quick to pass judgement after being named the Saudi-funded league's individual champion for 2024.

Following a victorious end to his first year , Rahm clinched the LIV Chicago title, ensuring his position as the top player for the season.

His triumph at Legion XIII saw him pocket an impressive $4 million in prize money, with an additional $18 million bonus for topping the league's charts over the year.

Rahm's departure from the PGA Tour to the LIV series at the close of 2023 signalled a significant shift, as he inked a contract reportedly worth $600 million to join forces with Phil Mickelson and others in the LIV lineup.

The two-time major winner's choice to transition was met with skepticism until a Golf Digest article this summer suggested Rahm had 'regretted' leaving the PGA Tour. However, Rahm has dismissed criticism directed at him and the league following his Chicago triumph.

Addressing spectators on Sunday, he remarked: "For anybody out there that's wondering, it is a little bit different experience than any other Tour out there, but it is closer experience to pretty much any other sport out there," adding, "I think this league has gotten a lot of -- quite a bit of a bad rap without people having experienced it."

"They've been too quick to judge. I think the vast majority of them would absolutely love spending a day out here. Most people that don't like the music, the second they come, they get over it. It's part of the atmosphere like in many other sports, and as a player and as a family man, it's been a fantastic experience for myself and my family the times that they've been able to come."

"Can't wait to get this season finished next week and start thinking about next year and seeing some different destinations."

Rahm's title win was a nail-biter, as he chased down former leader Joaquin Niemann throughout the season, leading to an exciting finale at Bolingbrook.

Niemann came close in the final regular season event of the year, finishing second, falling three shots short of the Spaniard. In tribute to his rival's role in the thrilling finish, Rahm said: "Yeah. I mean, you can't really script it that much better, right? ".

"I think it would have been very underwhelming if me and Joaco finished 21st and 22nd, so the fact that we both came out and we played good and you have that story to tell and it comes down to basically the last few holes, I think it's also more exciting for whoever wins, but it's a lot more exciting."

"I would say, for the viewers out there, too, to watch good golf because we're competing for the big championship."

Rahm's LIV campaign is far from over though. The former Masters winner will be hoping to swoop the double this week, as his Legion XIII squad heads into this week's Team Championship as the No. 2 seed in Dallas.
