Amy Winehouse movie that divided audiences is streaming on Netflix

The Amy Winehouse biopic that left audiences divided is now available to stream on Netflix .

Back to Black came out in May, following the tumultuous life of the iconic British singer. It was written by Matt Greenhalgh and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, starring Marisa Abela as Winehouse.

The movie was highly anticipated , with many looking forward to seeing her rise to fame. While much of the acting was praised , many were disappointed with the film’s storytelling.

It follows Winehouse’s life and the making of her album Back to Black, specifically the volitile relationship behind her award-winning album.

Back to Black has a 35 percent from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but it was better received by regular audiences. The audience score is 86 percent.

Kristy Puchko from Mashable wrote: “This Papering over of Winehouse and her story isn’t just bland and boring – it’s offensive.”

Emma Oxnevad from the Chicago Reader penned: “Much like the rapid tabloid coverage Winehouse faced, Back to Black is a lazy attempt to capitalize on both the success and struggles of a great artist.”

More positive reviews, however, praise the humanizing of Winehouse.

Tim Miller of the Cape Cod Wave Magazine said: “Back to Blacks tells a familiar story… But it still works, thanks .. to the dynamic central character, her knockout music, and the passionate performance of Marisa Abella, who plays – and sings as – Winehouse.”
