Liverpool FC honors Irish fan with black armbands after tragic accident in Milan

Liverpool FC players honored an Irish supporter with black armbands during their first Champions League match against AC Milan on Tuesday night, following the sad news of his death in Italy.

Earlier that day, it was reported that an Irishman had suffered fatal injuries in a traffic accident in Milan. The man was identified as 51-year-old Philip Dooley.

Philip, originally from Ireland, tragically lost his life when he was struck by a vehicle while crossing the A4 motorway near Orio al Serio airport in Bergamo.

As a mark of respect, Liverpool players wore black armbands during the game , and flowers were placed on the seat Philip was supposed to occupy at San Siro Stadium in Milan.

A representative for Liverpool FC expressed their condolences on the club's official website, stating: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our supporter Philip Dooley, following a road traffic accident in Bergamo in the early hours of this morning," reports the Irish Mirror .

"Philip was a lifelong Liverpool fan who had traveled to Italy to be at tonight's Champions League game against AC Milan. Our staff in Milan are working with the local police and consulate, and continue to provide support to other fans impacted by this devastating incident.

"The thoughts and prayers of everyone connected to the club are with Philip's family, friends, and fellow supporters at this extremely difficult time. Rest in peace, Philip."
