Walmart makes 'revolutionary' major self-checkout change after infuriating customers

Walmart has announced that it is modernizing its self-checkout process, to provide a faster and easier in-store experience for everyone. The superstore have begun printing many of its store-branded products with invisible barcodes.

This new process eliminates the need for shoppers to locate and scan those often-temperamental machine-readable sets of numbers and lines. While the concept seems revolutionary, it is not new. In fact, Walmart introduced it through its partnership with Digimarc in 2019.

According to Digimarc, the technology allows “packages to be printed all over with hundreds of barcodes without disturbing the package design.”

  • In practice, the customer can now simply move certain Great Value - Walmart’s own brand - products across the scanner without ever having to scan a visible barcode.

A Walmart spokesperson recently said in a statement provided to PennLive: “We’re piloting this technology’s potential to make the check-out process faster for customers and associates,”

The company hopes that this new technology will not only allow for a speedier, more efficient checkout process for customers, but also employees.
