A new Netflix movie adapted from a fan-favorite book has some wishing it had stayed on the page.

The platform has other movies and series that are adored by viewers. Some recently rediscovered the horror series Midnight Mass , calling it a “masterpiece.”

Uglies was released on Netflix on Sept. 13. The plot revolves around a dystopian world where people are forced to receive cosmetic surgery when they turn 18 to go from “Uglies” to “Pretties.”

Joey King leads the sci-fi film, playing the character Tally. Other cast members include Brianne Tju, Keith Powers, Chase Stokes and Laverne Cox as the villain.

In the r/NetflixBestOf discussion thread on Reddit, one user criticized the movie, wondering if it was the filmmakers’ fault or if the book is equally as bad.

Autumnlover1515 wrote: “... The script was so poorly written. Completely rushed, no time to be invested in any character, the effects were terrible, plot predictable, etc…”

People responded, saying the book just doesn’t translate well on screen, as most of it revolves around Tally’s inner thoughts.

GoldenAgeStudi wrote: “Most of the book is Tally being very introspective about the way the world IS vs how she thought it was. Internal monologues don't translate well, so there's a whole ocean of context that's simply not there.

“Excellent books, though, highly recommended,” the continued.

Squeezedashaman said: “Yeah the movie sucks but the books were great. They have done this to all my favorite YA novels. Only hunger games imo was even better than the books.”

Uglies was not rushed. It was the exact opposite. That movie was made years ago, and because of distribution rights, it got buried, and for some weird reason, they decided to release it to the public.. You guys didn't realize that the lead actress looks like ten years younger?.. That's because she was at that time..
