Iconic 2000s movie is getting a reboot with same iconic cast members

An iconic movie released in 2001, is getting a long anticipated third installment over 20 years later.

The Princess Diaries will make a return, starring Anne Hathaway as the beloved character Mia Thermopalis. Hathaway confirmed she’ll be returning for the new project, writing on Instagram, “Back to Genovia,” alongside a video of herself quoting the first two movies, “The fairytale continues.”

The first two films were adapted from the teen book series The Princess Diaries written by Meg Cabot. They centered around an awkward teenage girl who learns she is heir to the throne of a fictional European nation called Genovia. She attends princess lessons conducted by her grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi played by Dame Julie Andrews.

Earlier this year, an interviewer asked Anne Hathaway if there was any truth to the rumors that a third film was in the works , to which she replied ‘yep’ and refused to elaborate. Many of the original cast members like Mandy Moore, Sandra Oh, and Chris Pine have all hinted that they would be interested in rejoining the cast. However, fans will be disappointed to hear that it seems unlikely that the Queen of Genovia will return.

The 89-year-old Hollywood legend was asked about the 'threequel' by Access Hollywood in 2022, and said: “I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible. It was talked about very shortly after two came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run.”

Julie Andrews has not appeared in a non-animated film role since 2010 but does some voiceover work.

There is little information about the project available at this point. The last time the audience saw Mia Thermopalis she was crowned the new queen of Genovia after Clarisse stepped down from the throne. Fans think the third movie may draw inspiration from Cabot’s book series, which now contains 12 novels in the Princess Diaries universe.
