During the Pittsburgh Steelers' clash with the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, Justin Fields was hit hard and had to sit out two plays. He was temporarily replaced by Kyle Allen, making his first appearance for the Steelers, as Russell Wilson is still out due to a calf injury .

Fields suffered one of the season's harshest hits in the third quarter against the Cowboys, delivered by 260-pound defensive end Tyrus Wheat. Fields was attempting to pass to running back Najee Harris when he was struck down in the middle of the pocket, resulting in a 15-yard penalty for roughing the passer.

The Steelers ' quarterback seemed rattled and was taken into the blue medical tent for a concussion check. Allen briefly took over, completing a 19-yard pass and looked set to play for the remainder of the game.

However, Fields returned to the field after just two minutes of game time. After his brief break, Fields came back to complete four consecutive passes, culminating in a 15-yard touchdown pass to tight end Connor Heyward. This score gave the Steelers a four-point lead, which they maintained until the final moments of the third quarter, reports the Mirror US .

The Cowboys made a strong push downfield on their next drive, covering 50 yards, but their field goal attempt was blocked and recovered. After the blocked kick, Fields found it difficult to regain momentum, resulting in the Steelers' second three-and-out of the game.

The Cowboys' defence stepped up, disrupting the Steelers' offensive rhythm. Adding to Pittsburgh's woes, linebacker Nick Herbig exited the game in the third quarter with an apparent right knee injury.

Wilson, who has missed all five games this season due to a persistent calf injury, remained inactive against Dallas. Despite being fully kitted out on the sidelines, including his signature game day eye black, Wilson did not take to the field.

He has been present on the sidelines in full gear as he could potentially be called upon as the Steelers' emergency quarterback. In theory, he could have been brought into the game if both Allen and Fields were injured and unable to continue.

NFL sideline reporters noted that Wilson took part in all QB drills during practice and felt great, indicating he should be fit to play against the Raiders next week. The nine-time Pro Bowler's calf injury first emerged before training camp and reappeared before the season opener.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is still undecided on who will be the team's full-time starting quarterback. Despite early predictions that Wilson would take charge, Fields has led the team to a 3-1 record with wins over the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, and Los Angeles Chargers.

Wilson inked a one-year contract with Pittsburgh in March, worth $1.2 million, which is the minimum veteran contract. Prior to his stint with Pittsburgh, Wilson had a two-year run with the Broncos, where he threw for 6,594 yards, 42 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions.
