Walmart has announced a new round of store closures as they enter the final stretch of 2024. The superstore has already shuttered multiple stores nationwide this year.

Early this year, Walmart began its first wave of store closures by closing eight stores across four states - California , Maryland, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The closures included both Walmart Supercenters and Neighborhood Market stores, which are a smaller-scale grocery and pharmacy hub.

Now, the company area adding 11 more stores to their list of closures before the year is out. The full list includes:

    • 2121 Imperial Ave., San Diego, CA
    • 605 Fletcher Parkway, El Cajon, CA
    • 2753 E. Eastland Center Dr., West Covina, CA
    • 4080 Douglas Blvd., Granite Bay, CA
    • 40580 Albrae St., Fremont, CA
    • 3579 S. High St., Columbus, OH
    • 10400 E. Colfax Ave., Aurora, CO

Walmart has offered transfer options to employees in all of these stores, allowing them to move to other stores nearby. They have also offered severance packages to those who opted out of a transfer.

There are a number of reasons for the closures , the most prominent being underperformance, high operational costs, and in-store theft. In 2023, Walmart closed 24 stores across 14 states, citing theft and underperformance as reasons. They have also made changes to their stores to prevent shoplifting, like removing the self-checkout lanes and using new anti-theft software.

Despite the closures, Walmart is continuing to expand their empire in some parts of the United States. They have announced plans to open 12 new stores in the new year, focusing primarily on Neighborhood Market stores. They plan to remodel around 650 stores and build or convert 150 stores in the next five years.
