Bill Belichick's telling verdict on New York Jets ahead of Robert Saleh departure

Bill Belichick has already indicated that he believes the New York Jets are in with a shot at the Super Bowl this season.

Praising their squad this term, his comments have led to rumors among supporters that he might step into Robert Saleh's shoes after the latter's shock firing.

Saleh was fired from the Jets come Tuesday following a loss to the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday. The move raised eyebrows considering the team's 2-3 kick-off to the campaign and their playoff prospects still very much alive.

The Jets are sticking with both their offensive and defensive coordinators Nathaniel Hackett as OC and Jeff Ulbrich ad DC, with Ulbrich stepping up as acting head coach until they find a full-time head coach. Whether Belichick is up for a return to coaching this year is still up in the air; with the Patriots legend working in media and relishing his new romantic life.

There have been suggestions that he won't return to coaching until 2025. Yet, a proposition from The Big Apple could well be tempting, especially with the Jets thought of as a strong candidate to win the AFC East.

Belichick wasn't shy in expressing his positive views on the Jets' line-up. Earlier in the preseason, he commented: "The Jets are one of the hardest teams to prepare for from a skill standpoint because of Breece Hall. Outstanding running back that has the ability to take the ball the distance. He's very good in the passing game.

"Defensively you want to do everything you can to get the ball out of his hands and load the box. The problem is, if you load the box you're singled out there on Wilson, and that's a tall order. Aaron (Rodgers) knows how to use them and Aaron will know where the defense is heavy and where they're light and be able to work the ball there," he said.

"They just need to solidify the consistency of the offensive line, but on paper I think they have a good offense, and they're hard to defend with a good quarterback, a great wide receiver, and a great running back."
