A Pennsylvania high school football player has collapsed during a game after suffering a "severe helmet hit". Carter Mason was playing in the Rochester vs Shenango game on Friday, October 4 when he was hit hard on the field.

The young man stumbled to the side-line but collapsed. He lost consciousness and was rushed to hospital with a brain bleed .

An initial update on the student's condition was shared by his family on a GoFundMe page set up to help his mother - who is a solo parent to Carter and his younger brother and sister - pay medical bills.

The update read: "Carter looks much better than last night. He is breathing on his own and they have removed the intubation . The doctors have also stopped the sedation and he is briefly opening his eyes."

Carter's mother, Terri, said there were " a lot of positive indications that this will be a long recovery from a very serious concussion , as long as other complications can be avoided and he continues to show strong improvement".

She confirmed on Tuesday that her son is still "mostly asleep" but had been able to sit on the edge of his bed and give the nurse a high-five. He wasn't able to tolerate a feeding tube despite multiple attempts to insert it .

Carter was due to be transferred to the inpatient rehabilitation unit that day .

"We’re just taking it day-by-day," Carter’s uncle Dean Friend said in a video update on Sunday from the teenager's bedside.

"Carter’s making some good progress," Sandra Friend added. "He is responding to some commands, he is saying words when he gets up, and he can sit up a little bit . We are hopeful that things are going to go well."

Carter's mother Terri told WPXI Friday's collision resulted in "multiple, multiple concussions."

Football is a dangerous sport. You can get paralyzed or die from injuries sustained during a game. I'm glad this young man is recovering. Concussions are hard to heal from and take years. I am still suffering from a concussion I got from falling and hitting my head on the floor. That happened in 2021. I still have severe dizziness from it.
