Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy may be synonymous with his role as gangster Tommy Shelby but the actor has had a career spanning decades now with much more up his sleeve.

While fans may be desperate to find out the fate of Tommy after he crafted the character into an icon for so many with his gripping performance, there is a little while to wait yet after filming only just got underway for the feature-length follow-up.

However, if you're a big fan of Irish actor Cillian there are plenty of other gripping roles he has put his incredible acting skills to work on over the years that you can bide your time with.

Here we take a look at some of Cillian's greatest movies to date...

    28 Days Later (2002)

Cillian starred as bicycle courier Jim in Danny Boyle's epic zombie creation 28 Days Later. The role thrust him into the spotlight as it saw Jim wake from a coma in a post-apocalyptic world where a virus has turned everyone into zombies.

The movie was so popular it got a sequel in 2007's 28 Weeks Later, but Cillian did not join the cast for that one. He is however set to reprise his role in the next sequel, 28 Years Later, which is scheduled for 2025.

A Quiet Place Part II (2020)

Cillian is joined by his Oppenheimer co-star Emily Blunt for her husband John Krasinski's sequel to A Quiet Place. Following the death of Krasinski's character in the first film, the Abbott family are now on the run from the blind aliens and Cilllian plays Emmett, who is inspired by them.

While he doesn't speak much in the film he still won critical acclaim for his performance and the movie was a huge hit with audiences.

    Batman Begins (2005)

Cillian originally auditioned for the role of Batman, however, he was instead cast as villain Dr. Jonathan Crane - known to comic fans as Scarecrow. His work was a big hit with director Christopher Nolan and they went on to work together numerous times including a reprisal of the role in two sequels.

The performance may not have been as iconic as Heath Ledger's Joker or Tom Hardy's Bane, but Cillian did deliver a worthy foe in Scarecrow. Nolan meanhwile found himself captivated by Cillian's striking blue eyes and told The Guardian: "He has the most extraordinary eyes, and I kept trying to invent excuses for him to take his glasses off in close-ups."

    Inception (2010)

Cillian starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in this sci-fi thriller also from Christopher Nolan. The director originally gave him first-pick of any role he wanted from the movie and instead of opting for the lead he chose the supporting position as he felt it was more suited to his skills as an actor.

Cillian previously told Irish Central how he saw his character Robert Fischer as "deeply lacking emotionally." He claimed he took inspiration for the part from Rupert Murdoch's sons.

The performance of his career to date - aside from Tommy Shelby of course. In his debut lead role for Nolan, Cillian's incredible portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project took them all the way to the top of every awards ceremony going, including the Oscars .

The film was a huge hit with viewers as well as critics and now holds the Box Office records for the highest-grossing biopic and the highest-grossing World War II-related film.

In the film Cillian stars as Damien O'Donovan alongside Pádraic Delaney as his brother Teddy. The brothers join the Irish Republican Army as they fight for Irish independence but soon find themselves on opposing sides during the Civil War.
