Walmart and Dollar Tree shoppers are being advised to inspect their dollar bills before making purchases . This is due to increased scrutiny of damaged banknotes, which may cause checkout issues for those who don’t verify their currency. Major retailers are reportedly tightening their acceptance of bills, according to Vibes.

Notes that are torn or missing corners will not be accepted, and shoppers could face problems if they attempt to use discolored bills. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing defines mutilated currency as notes that have been damaged by fire, water, or chemicals.

However, there’s no need to worry if you have damaged bills , as they can be exchanged at banks nationwide, according to Treasury officials.

Experts estimate that between $70 million and $200 million in counterfeit currency is currently in circulation . Law enforcement has highlighted the dangers of counterfeit bills, noting that they can undermine the currency system and result in financial losses for businesses and individuals.

Ashley Tokoi of the Riley County Police Department emphasized that the spread of fake currency could erode trust in local economies.

“Counterfeit bills pose a significant threat to the community as they undermine the integrity of our currency system and can lead to financial losses for businesses and individuals,” Tokoi said, reports the US Sun.

Before shopping, customers can conduct a few simple checks to determine if they have counterfeit bills. For instance, raised printing on a note can be a warning sign, and rubbing your fingers over the bill may help detect fakes. Genuine banknotes feature a watermark visible from both sides when held up to light.

Those with a magnifying glass can examine the small print, serial numbers, and colored fibers on the bills. The Secret Service has released a guide to help the public recognize authentic currency. If anyone suspects they have encountered counterfeit money, they should report it to their local police.
