Connecticut man urged to get life sentence after fatal baseball bat attack on stepson

A Connecticut man , Abdulrahim Sulaiman, 38, has been hauled before the courts, accused of a heinous attack on his stepson with a baseball bat that tragically ended the six year old's life. The boy's family are now demanding that the alleged murderer be imprisoned for life.

Clad in a spit mask, Sulaiman faced charges of murder and murder with special circumstances in court, relating to the September 25 assault on his wife and her two children.

The victims sustained severe injuries; however, Jathan Escobar, six, suffered catastrophic harm. When authorities arrived, they found the young boy with brain matter exposed on his bloodied head.

After a fight for his life, he succumbed to his injuries after a week. Speaking to the Connecticut Post, the deceased boy's aunt expressed her horror: "He's a monster and should be locked away for life."

Another aunt, Jasmin, is seeking answers: "We want to know why it happened, why my nephew got beaten to death. We want answers from [the state Department of Children and Families] as well. They knew there were problems in that house but didn't do anything, and we want to know why."

In addition to the murder charges, Sulaiman is also facing counts of attempted murder and assault. According to police reports, he turned violently on his family wielding a baseball bat after consuming angel dust.

Previously, Sulaiman was charged with three counts of attempted murder and gun possession. During his appearance at Bridgeport Judicial District Court on Thursday, he reassured Judge Tracy Lee Dayton while donning the spit mask, saying, "Don't worry," "I'm not going to misbehave."

Authorities didn't take any risks despite his promises of good behaviour. The Connecticut Post reports that after multiple 911 calls described a man "severely assaulting" a woman and her children, police swarmed the family residence.

Upon the officers' arrival, it's alleged the suspect made an escape attempt by jumping head-first into a bin.

At the scene, he was seen talking to himself, his arms and hands covered in blood. A neighbour pointed him out to the police saying, "That's him," they said. "Don't let him get away."

The man's spouse reported to the police at St. Vincent's Medical Center that he had smoked angel dust, brandished a firearm at them, and attacked them with a baseball bat. A 22-caliber handgun was later found in the home by the authorities.

Recent revelations have surfaced that about two months prior, the state's child welfare agency had been involved with the family, as reported by the news outlet. DCF Commissioner Jodi Hill-Lilly stated that the event was "shocking and horrendous" in an official statement.

Nonetheless, the family is still searching for explanations. "I just feel that someone failed this family and that this could have been prevented," lamented Anna Escobar.

Following the abolition of the death penalty, the charge of murder with special circumstances was introduced and can result in a life sentence without parole.
