The Washington Commanders have made a decision on Sam Hartman’s future in football , not long after the former Notre Dame star made his NFL feelings clear .

Washington released the backup quarterback yesterday, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. They also announced their decision on X at 4:05 pm yesterday, penning a statement to confirm the news.

With backup Marcus Mariota healthy, the Commanders waived Hartman- who used to play for Notre Dame - from their 53-man roster.

Hartman started the regular season on the practice squad, but was signed to the 53-man roster after Mariota suffered his injury.

If Hartman can clear waivers, he is predicted to rejoin the Commander’s practice squad.

Besides Mariota and starter Jayden Daniels, the Commanders also have Jeff Driskel on their roster as quarterback.

The 25-year-old joined the Commanders as an undrafted free agent from Notre Dame in the spring, after he had a college career spanning six seasons.

The Commanders gave Hartman one of the biggest deals among undrafted players with a $20,000 signing bonus and a $225,000 base salary guarantee.

During his college career at Wake Forest, Hartman racked up 15,656 passing yards, and threw for 134 touchdowns with 49 interceptions. He became the school’s all-time leading passer.
