During the early morning of the Friday before the All Things Go music festival, the first time the festival hit the big apple, Chappell Roan was set to perform.

Then, she announced via Instagram that she was dropping out.

Hours later, Reese Havoc, Hanukah Lewinsky, and five other drag queens , Beajuangless, Dev Doee, Mo’Riah, Kevin Aviance and Aquaria, joined forces to save the day at the NYC All Things Go Festival.

Havoc and Lewinsky talked exclusively with IrishStar.com about what went down when replacing the pop star.

Both drag queens said that their friend, fellow drag queen Beaujangless, organized the group of girls the night before.

“Beaujangless, a local NYC drag queen, curated the set. She contacted all of us that night around 7 pm,” said Havoc.

Beau put five queens, herself, Havoc, Lewinsky, Doee and Mo’Riah in a group chat, and let the girls know that they would be joined by Aquaria and Kevin Aviance.

“It kind of felt like she was assembling the drag avengers,” Lewinsky said.

“It was really fun. That was the first time that specific group of people all got to work together,” Havoc added.

Lewinsky had met Roan before, when she opened up for her last year at the Brooklyn Steele. She said when she met Roan for the first time, it felt like old friends catching up.

“With Chappell it is on the level of seeing eye to eye,” she explained. “We appreciate her, she appreciates us, it’s like a mutual exchange of energy, we both kind of see each other.”

Lewinsky added that Roan has always been vocal about the drag community, noting that she’s been to a lot of the drag bars in NYC, maybe even every one, and she even featured two drag queens, Meatball and Pork Chop, in her very first music video, Pink Pony Club.

The girls explained that they got to the music festival two hours before the set, to get ready, do finishing touches, explore the space and more.

“I think everyone was as prepared as they could be,” Havoc explained.

“We all had plenty of time from the time that Beau reached out,” Lewinsky said, “Drag queens are used to getting something ready that’s very exciting, very quickly.”

Then, it was time for the girls to get on stage, which they did, coming out one by one.

Beaujangless, who hosted the event, went out first, then Reese, then Hanukah, according to Lewinsky.

“The crowd really loved it- in that moment and online. The general consensus felt like we were able to add something exciting and new to that day,” explained Lewinsky.

“It was by far the coolest experience of my life thus far. Just that I got to do it to music that I love, for an artist that I love, with such close friends, it was 10/10. I wouldn’t change it for the world,” she added.

“I hope that chappell was able to watch videos from the day and see how much people love her and love her music. I hope she saw the sense of community that people rallied together for that day,” said Havoc.
